Description
RETOPROSOST-2-CM intends to contribute in a significant and visible way to promote a sustainable production and an industrial symbiosis relations between companies in the productive sector in the Community of Madrid. This initiative aims to become a benchmark project at national level that will serve to increase the social visibility of circular economy initiatives. The ultimate objective of the proposed programme is to change the paradigm of goods and energy production from the predominant model of linear flow of materials and energy to another involving a circular economy approach through the implementation of industrial symbioses that promote the interconnection of materials supplies between companies, so that the effluents and residues generated by some entity become secondary raw materials for others.
The most relevant results to be achieved are: 1) Transformation of waste from the food industry into bioplastics through chemical and biotechnological routes for packaging and textile uses; 2) production of nanocellulose derivatives for the formulation of new composites and use as flocculants in water treatment; 3) production of prebiotic amendments and sustainable biofertilizers for crops; 4) production of enzymatic biodispersants for industrial use; 5) production of biofuels; 6) optimization of water systems and energy generation of companies; 7) Improvement of the image of the Community of Madrid as a focus of innovation in Spain and as a sustainable region and 8) Attraction and retention of talented researchers.
The technological relevance of the Programme lies in the innovative approach adopted and, above all, in the active participation of the associated companies, which will allow the results of the proposed research to transcend the limits of the academic field and may materialize in concrete technical implementations, contributing thus to generate wealth in the productive sector in a sustainable way. The experience in develoiping concepts of industrial symbiosis and circular economy will favour the participation and leadership of international networks and consortia.
Expected impact: Promote the leadership of Madrid as an innovative region at European level. Contribution to the Regional Strategy of Research and Innovation for an Intelligent Specialization (RIS3) of the Community of Madrid and to move toward a sustainable Madrid. To contribute to the European 2020 strategy and to the European Initiative on Raw Materials and help approach the challenge of getting 20% of GDP by 2020 from
industrial sources. The Programme is complementary to the modernization plan of the agrifood sector initiated in the Community of Madrid in 2018. The demonstration of the use of secondary raw materials of low cost to manufacture products of value can attract technology-based companies and encourage the establishment of new business relationships between the generators of waste and the transforming companies. Thus, the profitability of the primary producers would grow, consolidating their presence in the Community of Madrid. This, together with the consolidation of the processing companies, would promote employment, the stability of the productive sector and the economic diversity of the region.
Multidisciplinary nature: The consortium of research groups and companies has a markedly multidisciplinary nature. The GCPUCM group, as experts in production of cellulose derivatives, water treatment, scaling and control of bioprocesses, CIB, as experts in biotechnology, CIEMAT, as experts in waste energy, INIA, as experts in the treatment of materials lignocellulosics and management of primary industries. The companies directly involved in the research and development activities to be addressed are also multidisciplinary since they operate in the agrifood,
packaging, textile, nutraceutical and cosmetics, animal feed and biomass management.
