International Women's Day was promulgated by the United Nations (UN) in 1975, the year it was officially commemorated for the first time, although it had been celebrated much earlier.
At the Margarita Salas Center for Biological Research (CSIC), 57% of the staff are women, working as scientific staff, in training and technical and administrative support.
To commemorate this day, we launched the campaign #NosotrasSomosCIB on social networks, presenting different female colleagues of the center and the work they develop in the CIB Margarita Salas.
In addition, our colleague Gema Elvira Serrano will participate in the event organized on March 7 on the occasion of this commemoration at the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo in Madrid. She will be giving talks to primary and secondary school students, as well as contributing to a round table with high school students.
International Women's Day, formerly known as International Working Women's Day, commemorates every March 8 the struggle of women for their participation in society and their full development as a person, on an equal footing with men. The motto that the United Nations (UN) has given to the celebration in 2025 is "For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment" to claim the need to expand equal rights, power, and opportunities for all, with a feminist future in which no one is left behind. Empowering the next generation is at the core of this idea, as youth, especially young women and adolescent girls, will be the protagonists of lasting change in the future.
