On October 4, the new master's degree in Integrative Synthetic Biology (MISB) was inaugurated at the Margarita Salas Center for Biological Research (CIB-CSIC), which is the result of an alliance between the National Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and the University Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP). Nine students join this first edition that will be held in the period 2021-2022.
The inaugural lecture of the master will be given by molecular biologist Jack W. Szostak, 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his work on the discovery of telomerase. The presentation, which will be held online, will take place on Thursday, October 7, and can be followed live, starting at 4:00 p.m. Spanish time, on the CSIC Comunicación channel on YouTube.
The Master in Integrative Synthetic Biology is the first postgraduate school on synthetic biology in Spain. It is a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) whose objective is to provide postgraduate students (coming from degrees in life sciences, physicochemical sciences, technology and engineering) an integrated program of training, research and innovation on synthetic biology in a state-of-the-art scientific environment.
The master's degree is a collective action of higher education taught in the main centers of the CSIC that develop research in the area of integrative synthetic biology: the CIB Margarita Salas (CIB-CSIC) and the National Center for Biotechnology (CNB-CSIC), both in Madrid, and the Valencia Institute of Integrative and Systems Biology (I2SysBio). In addition, it has the active participation of the biological orientation research programs of the Rocasolano Institute of Physical Chemistry (IQFR-CSIC), and of groups from other CSIC institutes, and several academic and research centers, both national and foreign.
